Serge IVANOFF (1893-1983)
Serge Petrovitch Ivanoff (Иванов Сергей Петрович) was born in Moscow (Russian) in 1893, and showed artistic ability from a young age. On the family’s move to St. Petersburg, he took the opportunity to further his artistic studies by enrolling at the Imperial Academy of Arts in 1917, at the height of the Russian Revolution. The turmoil of the aftermath of these events prompted Serge Ivanoff, with his wife and two young children, to move permanently to Paris in 1922.
A talented portraitist, he quickly established himself in Paris and soon had the celebrities of the day commissioning him to paint their portraits, including Pope Pius XI, the dancer and choreographer Serge Lifar, poet Paul Valery, composer Arthur Honegger, and many notable Russian exiles now making their home in Paris. Between 1930 - 1950, he also regularly provided illustrations for the French journal L’Illustration, and painted a series of luminous and lyrical nudes.
In 1950 Serge Ivanoff moved to the U.S.A., again specialising in portraiture, including Eleanor Roosevelt and the diplomat Jefferson Caffery amongst his subjects. However by the 1960’s he had returned to Paris where he continued to exhibit regularly at the Salon des Indépendants, receiving a Gold Medal from the Minister of Cultural Affairs, André Malraux, in 1966.
Serge Ivanoff died in Paris in 1983.

MICHELLE BENNETT OATES
Bennett Oates was born in London in 1928.  He has a broad interest in painting and examples of his portraiture, landscape and animal paintings can be found in many private collections, but it is his flower paintings that have made his reputation.

Now acknowledged as one of the finest artists working in this genre in the world, his draughtsmanship and technique bears comparison with the best of the Dutch School.  But, it is his use of the gentler English hues where strong colours are used `jewel-like' in conjunction with white and pastel shades that produce the subtle quality and restrained taste that make his paintings unique.

Those knowledgeable in the English school will notice the influence of Gerald Cooper with whom he studied, after leaving Grammar School, at Wimbledon College of Art.  At the age of 15 his first flower painting was accepted at the Royal Academy and he then went on to win a scholarship to the Royal College of Art.

It is coincidental that in Great Britain live four or five of the greatest flower painters in the whole of the world painting in a traditional manner in the mid 20th  Century.  Gerald Cooper became especially well known painting flowers with a direct influence from the finest of the Dutch School of the 18th and 17th Centuries.  Cooper was world famous in his lifetime with his contemporaries Cecil Kennedy and Harold Clayton.  However, Cooper perhaps became the best known of them all though exhibiting year on year in the Royal Academy often “on the line” and either side of the Royal portrait of the year.

He had an association with E Stacy-Marks Limited that stood some 35-40 years but it was only on the death of Gerald Cooper that Bennett Oates approached E Stacy-Marks Limited having not painted for several years professionally.  Bennett Oates had left College and gone into the world of Commerce and for some 20 years had only painted occasionally as a hobby.  In about 1970 he began to be unsettled in his world of commerce and approached E Stacy-Marks Limited to take on his work but because he was lacking in practice at this juncture he was very nearly refused.  However, he persisted selling his very early works through the company for £150 each.  He then managed to take a two year sabbatical from his normal job and went back to work in earnest and during that time improved dramatically and soon began to establish himself as one of the world’s finest traditional flower painters.  At his height he was probably able to paint some 15 paintings a year.  However, his output has now reduced considerably but he has still managed the quality and beauty of his work.  It should be noted that his entire life’s output in flower paintings will almost certainly be less than 400 works.  Bennett Oates believes that anything worthwhile in art is founded in craftsmanship and a thorough grasp of technique and striving for hits should be for absolute objectivity.   Only with the use of this language can the artist express his magic in his particular medium.

With this in mind, his daughter Michelle Bennett Oates was apprenticed to her father and is now working professionally in the Norfolk Fens as a wildlife artist

THE HUMAN HEART - A MUSICAL INSTRUMENT. ARTIST RUDOLPH CARL GORMAN (USA, 1937) AND A BIT OF WISDOM FROM LYUBVNOY OSHO

Rudolph Carl Gorman - Navajo Indian people. Born in 1937 in a family of artists. My father taught painting may therefore Rudolf painted since childhood - from 3 years. Painted everywhere - on the sand, dirt, scratching on the rocks comprehensible only to him pictures. By the way, the painting on the sand is one of the elements of traditional Navajo culture. Their first "sculpture" he sculpted from natural clay, since clay future artist in childhood is not seen. Big role in his upbringing belongs grandmother who enthusiastically talked about his roots, the ancestors, bright colors to paint the legends of his tribe. The boy has a slim susceptibility felt good nature. The main occupation of the Navajo pastoralism is so very young, he went into the valley and herded sheep. High sky, flowers, grass, silence fills his soul with a special state of peace, happiness and harmony. He liked to reminisce about childhood years and this sweet feeling of freedom overwhelms him at the time. Then study, service in the Navy, again studying at the university, but the specialty. In 1958 he won a scholarship to study, outside the United States and went to study at the College of Art in Mexico City. Relationship with known Mexican artist noticeably influenced his work.

His paintings are colorful and symbolic, and favorite topic - women. Female characters in his paintings are special. He humorously says that "women are better filled with large leaf", and he is not a fan of the ideal woman, they do not happen. Perfect female characters exist only on the covers of glossy magazines. His "big women" are gentle, graceful. Flowing lines and smooth, really fascinating. And though the paintings resonate in their stories and felt that many of them - fashion (original paintings sold out immediately), but I want to see his paintings. Women in traditional costumes, shawls, jugs, flowers, starry sky, the birds - everything is lush, beautiful, warm and even sublime.

Since 1970, it became known not only in the US but also abroad. Rudolph Carl Gorman, being a famous artist of drawing and painting, sculptor, became the face of Indian contemporary art. He was called the "Indian Picasso" or "Picasso of the Navajo." In 37 years, he opened the world's first Indian art gallery. The artist had over twenty solo exhibitions, and a day of 1986 in San Francisco became the Day of Gorman. Life Rudolph Carl Gorman, his work served as a model for many talented Indians. He went from working with oil, acrylic and pastels with a lithograph, ceramics and sculpture. His image of a woman - chaste, feminine - you can see on the jugs and vases.

Female images Gorman are in the collections of many museums in the world and in private collections (Gregory Peck, Schwarzenegger, Elizabeth Taylor, Jackie Kennedy Onassis, Andy Warhol). By the way, Andy Warhol (iconic persona of Modern Art), even made his portrait.

The acrylic paintings by artist Bradley Jackson can brighten any room. Whether it is a painting of his nostalgic reminiscence of time past, a portrait of songbirds or an idyllic day of wandering in the beauty of a nature scene, his paintings are bright and airy, filled with lush colors.
Now one of the most popular wildlife artist in the US, Brad grew up in the woods of Northern Maine on the banks of the St. John River where he developed his deep affection and love of nature and wildlife. It is this influence that continues to be evident in his paintings to this day.
Known for his realistic approach, exactness for detail and a feeling for the actual essence of life, he uses acrylic paints in a unique application to capture the very heart of nature. Using the smooth surface of an illustration board, he begins laying in his background colors with a watered down acrylic and airbrush. His backgrounds tend toward the soft focus: detailed, yet soft and shimmering. By using full strength acrylic paint he creates a sharp detailed subject. Through this technique, Brad achieves a photo-realistic portrayal. Brad explains,
"I have tried to transcend the materials used and the surface worked on to create as much depth and space relationship as possible. If it looks like a photograph, so be it. I enjoy creating an impressionistic background with a very detailed and realistic subject."
Brad's paintings have a loyal and growing audience because they celebrate the spirit of nature and bring back memories of bygone days. The wilderness, the wonders of nature, and wildlife hold a great fascination for him. The quality of ever-changing seasons create an unending source of inspiration that beckons his heart and hand.
His works are included in many private collections throughout the world and he has exhibited in such prestigious art shows such as: the National Wildlife Art Exhibition in Kansas City, KS; the Wildlife Festival in Tulsa, OK, Southeastern Wildlife Exposition, Charleston, SC, the Michigan Wildlife Art Festival in Southfield, MI, and the Waterfowl Festival in Easton, MD.
His work can be purchased at the Painted Pony Restaurant, Bethlehem, CT or by appointment in his studio in Weathersfield, VT. Brad's art is published by MBJ Fine Arts.
